USB-C® in a nutshell.
htmp. is bringing USB-C® power Connectivity into portable professional applications.
What's the difference?
Why is it absolutely necessary today?
Dive in for more information here:

USB-C® #1:
THE universal connector

USB-C is the universal connector today and for the foreseeable future.
It is applied by USB technology and other protocols, like Thunderbolt, PCIe, HDMI, DisplayPort and more, and extensible to support future standards.
With benefit for consumers and environment in mind,
EU legislation requires the use of USB C® for most consumer devices beginning December 2024, and for mandates USB-C charging for laptops beginning April 2026.
Legislation in India and California approved similar standards coming in effect within the next years. Nevertheless, the EU legislation is already forcing technical changes in the marketplace globally.
For example Apple Inc. replaced their proprietary Lightning Connector with USB C® beginning with the iPhone 15 and new AirPods Pro in 2023 already.
Today most higher tier laptops are equipped with USB C® charging.

USB-C® #2:
Performance protocols

One versatile connector for “everything”!
USB C offers Power Delivery (PD) protocols in a wide range of distinctive voltage and current levels, from as little as 5V@0.1A (0.5W) to massive 48V@5A (240W).
Data transfer protocols reach with some standards a transmission speed of up to 40 Gbps (USB4®).
Additionally it can provide USB or Alternate Mode protocols for Network connection, Video transmission, like HDMI, DiplayPort, or MHL, and Audio input / output.

USB-C® #3:
Only ONE connector?
How does USB Power Delivery work?

Prior to USB-PD specifications, a USB host (such as a laptop, for example) was always the power provider and the USB device (i.e. a mouse) was always the power consumer.
Charging the battery of the host computer was considered a separate action and done usually with specific AC-adapters and connectors, incopatible and not interchangable between brands or even models.
With USB-C® any power adapter should (theroretically) work with any device, considered sufficent power output matching the particular consumer. The PD specification greatly improves the USB functionality and defines power roles (Power Source / Sink) that are independent of the data roles (USB host / USB device).
This includes the ability to swap power and data roles independently.

Power Roles
A USB PD device can only take up a role either as Power Source or as Power Consumer (Sink) at a given moment.
This makes perfectly sense.
It is very important to remember that a battery cell can NEVER charge and discharge at the same moment. Technically impossible!

Power negotiation
When two USB-C® devices are connected (the typical USB C® – USB C® cable), they communicate and negotiate
- their roles: Who is Power Delivery (Source, DFP) and who is the Power Consumer (Sink, UFP)?
- a common Voltage/Current level the power Delivery can provide and the consumer requests.
For additional operational safety, a USB-C® cable would be electronically marked for which maximum current level it is specified.
Accordingly there are many different cable types on the market to cover the many different protocols.

USB-C® #4:
Role Swapping in USB-PD
Consumer applications vs professional applications

Port Partners can exchange their Source and Sink roles.
For example, a battery changes its role from being charged (Sink) to becoming a power supply (Source).
This requires a new negotiation sequence between devices.

Among consumer devices, role swapping is typically happening when devices are disconnected and reconnected, aka, a USB-C® connector removed and re-inserted.
We unplug the battery from the charger and plug in a mobile and the battery becomes the power source for the mobile.

In professional applications, like portable kits with batteries and laptop, disconnecting and connecting batteries or laptop with a charger or with each other to manage system power and uninterrupted operation is not only highly unpracticable and disrupting the workflow, but also requiring constant monitoring charging levels of batteries and laptop (laptop battery).

The smart htmp. SwitchCon module (see below) is taking care of this with AC power supply auto-detection and provides a smooth, intervention-free transition between AC and Battery system power supply.
It also switches automatically from battery 1 to battery 2 power supply.
No plugging-in / unplugging for charging or battery swap necessary anymore.

htmp. SwitchCon hands-free, automatic handling of USB-C® role swapping.

AC-Mode.
The htmp. SwitchCon detects automatically the prescence of USB-C® charging / system supply power when the USB-C® AC-Adapter is connected to AC mains, and enables through three independent channels the flow of charging / system supply power to max. 2 batteries and one consumer, usually a laptop.

Battery 1 Mode.
When AC power is unavailable, the htmp SwitchCon immediately and automatically connects battery 1 to the consumer for power negotiation and subsequently power supply from battery 1 to the consumer.
This connection protocol needs a few seconds to complete. During this period the laptop battery provides all necessary system power without interruption of system functions.

Battery 2 Mode.
The htmp. SwitchCon module identifies immediately the depletion of battery 1, disconnects battery 1 from the consumer and connects battery 2. Negotiations and power supply are initated automatically, and the laptop battery works again as buffer to bridge the time needed for the USB-C® PD protocol to proceed with uninterrupd system operations.
